How to use the snow removal calculator

Snow weighs far more than it looks — wet snow can run 20 pounds per cubic foot, which is why driveways get cleared by people who then need an ambulance. Enter your area and snow depth to see the total weight you would be moving, a realistic shovelling time, and how much de-icer the surface needs.

What this calculator assumes

Every estimate depends on figures that vary by supplier and conditions. These are the ones used here, so you can sanity-check the result against your own quote.

  • Snow density is the single biggest variable: fresh powder is around 5 lb per cubic foot, average snow 15, and wet or slushy snow 20 to 30. Pick honestly — the weight figure quadruples across that range.
  • Clearing rates are rough: roughly 2,000 lb per hour by shovel, 20,000 with a single-stage blower and 40,000 with a two-stage. Your actual rate depends on throw distance, surface and fitness.
  • Ice melt rates are per 1,000 sq ft. Over-applying is the most common mistake — it damages concrete, kills grass and pets' paws, and does not melt ice any faster.
  • Calcium chloride works down to about −25 °F; ordinary rock salt (sodium chloride) stops working near +15 °F. In deep cold, more salt achieves nothing.
  • Snow shovelling is genuinely hazardous. Cold air, exertion and an unaccustomed load cause a documented spike in heart attacks after heavy snowfall. If you have any cardiac risk, pay someone.

How much does snow weigh?

Between 5 and 30 pounds per cubic foot depending on how wet it is. Six inches of average snow on a 60 by 12 foot driveway is 360 cubic feet — about 5,400 pounds, or nearly 3 tons. The same driveway under wet snow is over 7,000 pounds.

How long does it take to shovel a driveway?

A typical two-car driveway under 6 inches of average snow is around 2½ to 3 hours of continuous shovelling — which is why almost nobody does it continuously. A two-stage blower brings the same job down to well under 30 minutes.

How much ice melt do I need?

About 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet for a normal application — so a 720 square foot driveway needs roughly 3 pounds. That is far less than most people spread. Pre-treating before the snow arrives uses even less and works better than trying to melt bonded ice afterwards.

Is shovelling snow dangerous?

Yes, measurably. Cold constricts blood vessels while heavy lifting spikes your heart rate and blood pressure, and hospitals see a clear rise in cardiac events after major snowfalls. Push rather than lift where you can, clear in stages during the storm rather than all at once, take frequent breaks, and if you have any heart condition, hire it out.

Will ice melt damage my driveway?

Rock salt accelerates freeze-thaw damage on concrete, especially concrete less than a year old, and corrodes rebar over time. Calcium magnesium acetate and sand are gentler alternatives. Whatever you use, spread it thinly and sweep up the excess rather than letting it wash into beds and lawns.
