How to use the paver base calculator
Almost every failed paver patio failed in the base. Get the depth right and the surface stays flat for decades. Enter your patio dimensions and base depth for the loose volume of crushed stone to order, with compaction loss included.
What this calculator assumes
Every estimate depends on figures that vary by supplier and conditions. These are the ones used here, so you can sanity-check the result against your own quote.
- Bulk density is assumed to be about 3,000 lb per cubic yard. Loose material varies with moisture and how finely it is ground, so treat the weight as an estimate.
- One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Suppliers almost always sell loose material by the cubic yard.
- Results include whatever waste allowance you entered. Bag counts are rounded up.
- This sizes the crushed stone base only. You also need about 1 inch of coarse bedding sand on top — use the paver sand calculator for that.
- Excavate to the base depth plus the bedding sand plus the paver thickness, so the finished surface sits where you want it.
- Base should extend 6 inches beyond the paver edge on all sides to support the edge restraint.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a paver base be?
Four inches of compacted crushed stone for a foot-traffic path, 6 inches for a patio, and 8 to 12 inches for a driveway. Add depth for clay soils or hard-freeze climates. Then allow 1 inch of bedding sand and the paver thickness on top when you set your excavation depth.
What is the best base material for pavers?
Crusher run or 3/4 inch minus crushed stone — angular material that includes fines. It compacts to a firm, load-spreading layer. Never use clean gravel, pea gravel or sand as the structural base; sand belongs only in the thin bedding layer.
Do I need sand and gravel under pavers?
Both, and they do different jobs. Compacted crushed stone carries the load. A 1 inch layer of coarse bedding sand lets you set each paver level. Skipping the sand makes levelling nearly impossible; skipping the stone means the patio sinks.
How do I measure my area for paver base?
Measure the length and width in feet at the widest points and multiply them. For an irregular bed, break it into rectangles, circles and triangles, calculate each one separately and add the results together. Rounding up slightly is safer than rounding down.
Should I order bulk or bags?
Bulk is almost always cheaper per cubic yard once you need more than about 1 cubic yard — roughly 14 bags. Bags win when you need a small amount, have nowhere to dump a pile, or want to spread the job over several weekends.
Will a cubic yard fit in my pickup truck?
A half-ton pickup can usually carry about 1 cubic yard of light material like mulch, but only around half a cubic yard of wet soil or gravel because of the weight. Check the weight figure above against your vehicle's payload rating before you load up.
